Orioles Report 9/19

That sucked. The whole week. Everything. It took some hero ball from Corbin Burnes to steal a singular win. Are the playoffs even a lock at this point?

A disgusting spot to be in, the price we pay as fans. Let's look back at the debauchery.

A Debacle in Detroit

Allowing the Tigers bullpen to take a perfect game into the eighth inning may truly be the low point of this season. It took a Gunnar Henderson two-out single in the ninth to prevent a no hitter from going down. The pathetic lack-of-effort at the dish wasted a gem from Zach Eflin, who surrendered just one earned run through 6.2 strong.

That was the Corbin Burnes Baltimore needs if they're going to pull off any sort of postseason miracle. Seven shutout innings, allowing just 3 baserunners while striking out 7. Welcome back Ace, stay a while.

Gunnar Henderson's cool summer dimmed his shine some, but let's give credence to his .281/37/87 line. Dude's been important at the plate for the team. Needs to clean up his work in the field however.

Nice to see Cade Povich settling in some after a rough first couple of starts. The 24-year-old's rocking a 3.18 ERA in the month of September, striking out 23 compared to just 4 walks. Plenty to be optimistic for with that!

The Giants Visit OPACY

Blake Snell should be an Oriole...the Giants were never going anywhere this season, but seemed hellbent on retaining the reigning Cy Young winner. Curious what the max offer Mike Elias offered up? Would Norby/Stowers have moved San Francisco's needle at all? Trevor Rogers certainly isn't moving any needles right now for Birdland.

Snell owned us Tuesday night, racking up 12 K's through 6 scoreless-- a painful reminder of what could've been.

We let Cole Irvin go but kept Craig Kimbrel?? 6 earned on 3 hits over two-third's of an inning was finally... finally the straw that broke the camel's back. The All-Star snub has been nothing short of horrible since the middle of July, literally forcing his way off the club. He won't be missed.

Austin Slater pinch hitting for Jackson Holliday again?? Analytics be damned, the kid's got to be put into some big opportunities and Hyde stole one from him. Holliday, who was 1-2 on the evening, looked visibly disappointed too. Patience seems to be running thin toward the manager.

Concluding Thoughts

Anything less than a competitive ALCS series will cost Brandon Hyde his job. The clubhouse is lost, the aura is gone. The scrappy coach who elevated the play of many a makeshift lineup just doesn't seem to have that same grip over what should be an ascending group of stars. He'll forever have a place in the hearts of the Baltimore faithful, but everyone's time comes eventually.

Danny Coloumbe is well in the midst of his rehab assignment with Norfolk, while Ramon Urias and Jordan Westburg just began theirs. This could be grasping at air, but there's potential for some legitimate reinforcements to rejoin this roster at a critical moment. Just waiting on you G-Rod...
