Orioles Farm Report 6/3

That's a week to put behind us in the O's minor league system. A few promotions, a couple of standout performances, but overall the worst showing so far in 2024.

They can't all be good ones though, even with a farm as stacked as this. Some learning opportunities for the Baby Birds:

Norfolk Tides

Lost series with Gwinnett Stripers 2-4

-Really quiet showing overall for the Tides' bats, scoring more than 2 runs just twice in six games vs. Gwinnett

-The Norfolk Four:

-Jackson Holliday: 7-17, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 5 R, 5 BB, 7 K-- collected a hit in each of his five starts

-Heston Kjerstad: 3-18, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 R, 4 BB, 12 K

-Connor Norby: 3-17, 0 HR, 3 RBI, 2 R, 4 BB, 8 K

-Coby Mayo: Reports were that Mayo was running during warmups with his teammates this week, indicating that the ribs can't be bothering him too much. Still imagine he's about a month away, but trending in the right direction

-Errol Robinson notched a hit in all three of his starts, bumping his average up .11 points

-Home run #10 for David Johnson on Friday, helping fuel Norfolk's one offensive breakout

-Chayce McDermott started the bookends in this series, surrendering 11 hits and 7 walks over 9 total innings. Not the WHIP you want to see, but only 4 scored and he also struck out 15

-First AAA start of Brandon's Young career saw him last 4, giving up 3 hits and 3 earned with 6 strikeouts

-6 earned over 3 IP for Cade Povich on Friday-- kid was due for a dud

-Justin Armbruester's been unwatchable the last month, allowing 28 earned runs and a .292 BAA in 5 starts. It may be time to look into him coming out of the bullpen

-Speaking of relievers, Nolan Hoffman had an excellent week, notching 6 strikeouts over 4 shutout frames. Matt Krook was awesome too, recording a save and 4 strikeouts in 3 scoreless appearances

Bowie Baysox

Tied series with Somerset Patriots 3-3

-What a week out of Samuel Basallo...8-21, 1 long ball, 3 RBI, plus 2 stolen bases and 5 walks. The kid did it all, and is really figuring out this AA pitching, batting .297 during the month of May

-TT Bowens started the series hot, going 6-16 with 2 home runs and 4 RBI before an 0-8 stretch in his last two games. He's seeing the ball well overall though, really entrenching himself as a key part of this lineup

-Anthony Servideo also came out of the gate swinging, with back to back 2 hit games on Tuesday and Wednesday. He scored 5 runs in his 5 appearances

-4 starts, 4 hits for Collin Burns. Not flashy numbers, but he's been a steady contributor at the dish

-Same can be said for Frederick Bencosme. The 21-year old collected a hit in 4 of his 5 games played

-2021 4th round pick Donta' Williams had a 4-11 week, upping his batting average to .179 while holding down left and center field

-Shoutout Carlos Tavera for the promotion to Norfolk. The righty went 3-0 with a 3.30 ERA in 9 starts for Bowie this year

-Kyle Brnovich had an incredible week: 2-0, 11 IP, 4 hits, 1 walk, 1 earned run, 9 strikeouts. A trip to Norfolk's going to be in his near future if he keeps that up. And the stache...

-Nice bounce back by Alex Pham after a career worst 9 earned runs allowed in last week's start. The righty struck out 7 and allowed 2 earned over 4 solid innings

-3.2 more scoreless frames out of Dylan Heid, lowering his ERA to 1.25 on the season. Opposing batters are hitting just .169 off of the 26 year old

-Ryan Watson recorded 3 scoreless of his own over 2 appearances, striking out 4 without allowing a base runner

Aberdeen Ironbirds

Tied series with Hudson Valley Renegades 3-3

-Dougie Hodo was an on-base machine, going 3-11 with 5 walks on the week. He managed to score thrice and successfully swipe 2 bags

-There's no cooling down Matthew Etzel. The quietly rising prospect batted .333 and drove in 8 while going 4/4 on stolen base attempts. It'd be shocking to not see him enter Baltimore's Top 30 once those mid-year rankings come out

-Enrique Bradfield Jr. collected 5 hits during the series, finishing up the month of May with a .284 average. After a really sluggish April, things are turning around swiftly at the plate for last year's 1st round pick

-Most productive week of catcher Adam Retzbach's season, going 3-10 with an RBI and 2 runs scored in 3 games

-Excellent starts from Jackson Baumeister on Tuesday and Sunday, totaling 8.1 innings with no earned runs, 4 hits, 4 walks and 7 strikeouts. He's currently rocking a sub-two ERA (1.89)

-2 scoreless frames out of Luis Sanchez and Zane Barnhart, providing some relief to a labored group of arms

-Edgar Portes only allowed 1 earned run in 3 innings. The fact he did so while surrendering 3 hits and 5 walks is really impressive

-Loving how quickly Luis de Leon has adapted to A+ ball. 4 walks in 3.2 wasn't great, but he struck out 6 and only allowed 1 to score-- a stat line you'll take in a guy's third start at the level

Delmarva Shorebirds

Lost series with Carolina Mudcats 0-6

-Aron Estrada's been on fire as summer's approached, posting a .333/2/4 line on the week, plus 4 stolen bases. He recorded a hit in all 6 games

-Stiven Acevedo continued his torrid ways at the dish as well, going 7-17 and driving in 4. He ripped a .353 average in the month of May

-Only 3 hits in 5 games for Aneudis Mordan, but his one Wednesday was a towering grand slam, his 8th of 2024

-19-year old Leandro Arias is figuring things out at the plate here lately, collecting a hit in 4 of 5 appearances and driving in 3

-Angel Tejada recorded 6 RBI on Sunday, remarkably without an extra base hit. He had 2 singles on top of 2 fielder's choices and a sac fly in order to finish with the abnormal box score

-Eccel Correa was awesome Tuesday, allowing just 3 hits and 2 walks through 4.2 scoreless. Sunday though...8 earned and he couldn't escape the second. As up and down a week as you're going to get

-Riley Cooper's performances mimicked Correa's, although in reverse. His 4 earned over 2.1 on Tuesday were followed up by a stellar 5 innings Sunday, only allowing 1 unearned run to touch home

-Nice relief effort from Blake Money on Friday night, surrendering just 1 unearned on 1 hit through 5.1 with 6 K's. A cold night from the bats dropped his record to 0-3 on the year

-Really bad week out of Jared Beck, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) in 1/3 of an inning...spanning 2 appearances. 5 walks and a hit in clutch moments will earn ya 2 decision losses

-We'd been wondering when that Michael Forret was coming back. Last year's 14th rounder lasted 5.2 frames, giving up 1 earned on 4 hits and a walk-- plus 2 K's
