Orioles Farm Report 6/10

Not as much commotion on the Orioles farm this week, as the brass allowed the newly promoted Birds to settle into their new nests. The results were solid across the board, which we were happy to see. Given some of the strong performances we witnessed, there may be another round on deck in the coming weeks here. We'll find out soon enough.

Til then...

Norfolk Tides

Lost series with Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders 2-4

-The Norfolk Three*:

-Jackson Holliday: 6-25, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 6 R, 5 BB, 7 K

-Heston Kjerstad: 5-25, 0 HR, 4 RBI, 4 R, 3 BB, 8 K

-Coby Mayo: Still working his way back from broken ribs. No news is seemingly good news on the matter

-After a cold series versus Gwinnett, Blake Hunt was more than solid against Scranton, posting a .350/2/4 line. Not a bad return for Michael Baumann

-Daniel Johnson doesn't get enough love on this Norfolk team. The journeyman went 9-25 on the week, taking one to the outfield bleachers and driving in 3

-Supremely productive showing from Billy Cook, going 3-14 during the week before exploding over the weekend with 5 hits, 2 home runs and 6 RBI. He's becoming a real sleeper in this system

-Terrin Vavra started the week strong, going 4-12 in the first three games before exiting late Thursday with a left groin strain. The ailment landed him back on the IL, where he returned from less than a month ago

-Vavra's injury opens the door for Errol Robinson to get some more play time, which he capitalized on with a .300 week and 3 RBI

-Three multi-hit games for Nick Maton on the series, bringing the average up to .276 on the season

-First AAA decision victory for Brandon Young on Tuesday, allowing 2 earned over 6 frames. Sunday was not as kind to the 25-year old, allowing 4 runs (3 earned) in just 2 innings of relief work

-Chayce McDermott struck out 8 while allowing a sole run to score through 6 on Saturday, walking just 3 on the start

-6 earned runs for Jonathan Heasley over 2.1 innings-- seen enough there

-Justin Armbruester also allowed 6 earned while recording just 7 outs. His ERA's currently at a gaudy 10.40. When does he start getting looks out of the pen??

-Julio Teheran surrendered 9 hits, 4 walks and 7 ER in 4 innings Sunday afternoon. Don't need him coming up to the big leagues anytime soon

-Bryan Baker, somehow, may be slowly making his way back that direction. He struck out 3 over 3 scoreless innings on the week, providing some useful relief to the Tides' starters

Bowie Baysox

Won series with Binghamton Rumble Ponies 4-2

-Another huge week out of Samuel Basallo, collecting a hit in all 6 games while parking 2 bombs beyond the outfield fences. It wouldn't be surprising at all to see him as the #1 prospect next season

-Johnny Rhodes continued his steady hitting, posting a .250/1/5 line while holding down the corner infield spots and 1st base, putting his defensive versatility on display

-Tough start to the series for Dylan Beavers, going 1-11 at the dish before finishing on a high note with 2 extra base hits, including his 8th homer of the season

-Jud Fabian showed his contact and power tools this week, finishing with a .333/1/2 line, elevating his averaging .16 points

-Only 3 hits in 17 at bats for catcher Silas Ardoin, but he was productive with them, driving in 3 for his efforts

-Seth Johnson stayed hot for the Baysox, totaling a scoreless 7.2 IP over 2 starts. He gave up 3 hits and 6 walks while striking out 12

-Best start of Cameron Weston's AA tenure, scattering a hit and 2 walks over 5 shutout frames, racking up 6 K's along the way

-Someone get Dylan Heid a promotion, because the 26-year old has been lockdown. He didn't allow a run in 4.2 innings, struck out 5 and earned his 4th save

-Back to Earth for Kyle Brnovich Saturday, managing to record just 1 out while allowing 3 hits, 3 walks and 5 earned runs. Not the encore we were looking for

-Two shutout relief appearances for Keegan Gilles on the week, plus 3 strikeouts

Aberdeen Ironbirds

Tied series with Brooklyn Cyclones 3-3

-Getting no hit on Tuesday definitely wasn't the way Aberdeen wanted to kick this series off

-The Ironbirds' pitchers responded to their Tuesday no-no by posting a shutout of their own. Preston Johnson started that affair, lasting 4 frames before Luis Sanchez, Yaqui Rivera and Kyle Virbitsky finished things off. Sanchez, Rivera and Virbitsky each posted additional shutout appearances on Sunday, helping secure a win

-Best week of the season for Mac Horvath, going 9-22 with 2 home runs, 5 RBI and 8 runs. On top of all that, Horvath also stole 6 bases. The 2023 2nd rounder has really been coming on strong since the middle of May

-Matthew Etzel continuing to put up Matthew Etzel numbers: 7-21, 5 driven in, 4 stolen bases. A move up to Bowie has to be imminent

-Not a bad couple of games for Dougie Hodo, posting a .263 average at the plate plus a long ball and 3 RBI

-We'd been looking for that Creed Willems the last few weeks! The fan favorite went 6-19 in his 5 appearances, driving in 3 on Saturday and Sunday

-Fellow catcher Adam Retzbach hit another long ball and walked 4 times during his 3 games

-Perfect 4-4 night for Maxwell Costes on Friday, including a 2-run dinger-- his first of the season

-Edgar Portes had a decent start on Thursday, navigating through 4 innings of his own, allowing just 1 earned on 4 hits, plus 7 K's

-Jackson Baumeister continued to throw well Saturday, surrendering 2 runs (1 earned) in 5 frames off of 3 hits and 3 walks

Delmarva Shorebirds

Won series with Lynchburg Hillcats 4-2

-After hitting .155 in April, Aron Estrada has been a stalwart for the Shorebirds offense. He went 8-21 this week, scoring 5 runs, driving in 2 and ripping a solo dinger while I was in attendance Tuesday. After hitting .330 during May at the plate, he's sitting at .345 so far for the month of June. Scorching

-Aneudis Mordan broke out the big bat for the first series of their homestand, finishing with a .333/2/7 line versus the Hillcats

-Leandro Arias started the week out with a rough 0-10 patch before finishing strong over the weekend, going 4-7 with a long ball and 4 RBI between Saturday and Sunday

-Big Friday for Anderson de los Santos, going 3-4 with a solo homer

-Stiven Acevedo's been on a nice roll here of late. He posted a .316/1/4 line for the series, upping his average to .295

-A hit in all three appearances for Luis Valdez, going 3-6 overall

-As mentioned above, Harper and I were present for dog night Tuesday and were given the privilege of sitting front row for Braxton Bragg's start. He did not disappoint, going 5 strong while only making 1 bad pitch-- which just so happened to be a two-run home run to Wuilfredo Antunez. The bats picked him up though, allowing Bragg to notch his second win of the year

-Daniel Lloyd and Juan Rojas combined to give up one unearned run over 6 innings in Wednesday's victory. The duo allowed just 4 base runners and struck out 5

-Nice to see Eccel Correa bounce back from the beatdown he suffered last Sunday, surrendering just 1 earned run on 2 hits and 2 walks over 4. His 6 strikeouts tied Blake Money for the most by any Shorebird pitcher this week

-Harif Frias was incredibly reliable out of the bullpen, allowing just 1 hit over 3.2 shutout frames. It's a trend we'd love to see continue for the tall righty, who entered the month allowing opposing batters to hit .354 off of him
