Our first international prospect in spotlight this season and it's a last name you've definitely heard before: Jaison Chourio. The younger brother of Milwaukee's former top prospect Jackson Chourio has enjoyed a ton of personal success on his journey to professional ball, starting out in playing in his native Venezuela.

Despite extensive searches, I was unable to find any information on Jaison's childhood, though it'd be fair to assume the two were competitive, clearly pushing each other to greatness. Will welcome any insight on the subject!

Almost exactly one year after Jackson signed with the Brewers, Jaison entered the International Prospect Pool as the 26th ranked player overall. The 16-year old was only 150 pounds, but already 6'1" and highly projectable (Cleveland.com). Many scouts agreed that his he had the athleticism to remain in centerfield long-term, with a frame that provided ample room to fill out as he physically matured.

The Cleveland Guardians liked what they saw from the young Venezuelan, ultimately inking Chourio to a $1.2 million dollar signing bonus in January of 2022.

Jaison rocks a very different skillset from his power-hitting big brother though. He's taller, leaner and lighter, at least as of typing this. He's only hit for four career home runs, where Jackson has six in the MLB this season alone. Instead, the younger Chourio relies on elite eye and contact skills to get it done at the dish.

This has been on display from the minute he hit the minor league circuit in '23. Cleveland assigned Jaison to their Arizona Complex team for majority of his first professional stint, where he absolutely dominated the competition. .349/.476/.463 splits, 28 driven in, 20/22 on stolen base attempts and more walks than strikeouts across 39 games of rookie ball earned the kid a deserved promotion to Class-A Lynchburg, where he'd spend the last two weeks of the season (MiLB.com).

Jaison struggled a bit during his transition upward, as many young players do, only managing 7 hits in 35 at bats for the Hillcats. But that was a trend that wouldn't last long. A highly productive offseason and Spring Training had Chourio moving quickly up Cleveland's top prospect rankings-- hype that he's delivered on thus far in 2024. He's currently hitting .294 with 3 long balls and 30 RBI while still stealing bases with general success and boasting a flawless career fielding percentage.

It's still very early, but this 19-year old hasn't shied away from the high bar put in front of him. In fact, last night down here on the shore he was just a double short of the cycle. Keep an eye on this exciting switch hitter as he continues to make his way through the minor leagues. Something tells me the name Chourio is going to be heard around Major League Baseball a lot over the next decade-plus.
