Over the 6 games for the week, they were outscored by opponents 28-32. It was a solid week for the Phillies as they wrapped up a 6-game road trip and maintained a decent lead in the Wild Card race.
They are 6-4 in their last 10 games and remain in 2nd place in the NL East with a 77-62 record, 14 games behind the Braves and 5.5 games ahead of the Marlins. They are currently alone in the first Wild Card position with a 2.5 game lead over the Cubs as they begin a week with matchups against division rivals in the Braves and Marlins, the latter of which is still fighting for a playoff berth.

Trea Turner - Turner was not injured, but he was placed on the paternity list and missed the last 2 games of the Padres series. Players can miss a maximum of 3 games while on the paternity list, so he is expected to return this weekend for the Marlins series.

9/1 @ Milwaukee Brewers - L (5-7)
Zach Wheeler got the start on the mound against Freddy Peralta. Kyle Schwarber hit a lead-off solo home run to give Philly a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the 4th, Willy Adames hit a 3-run home run to take a 3-1 lead. In the top of the 8th, Brandon Marsh hit an RBI single and Trea Turner hit a 3-run home run to take a 5-3 lead.
In the bottom of the 8th with Alvarado pitching, the Brewers scored on a bases loaded walk. They then scored 3 more on an error at third base by Alec Bohm to take a 7-5 lead. The Phillies were retired in order in the 9th inning to end the game. Zach Wheeler went 6 innings with 10 strikeouts, 0 walks, and 3 earned runs on 5 hits. The Phillies offense had just 5 hits as a team.
9/2 @ Milwaukee Brewers - L (5-7)
Aaron Nola got the start against Colin Rea. Kyle Scwharber hit a lead-off home run for the 2nd consecutive game to take a 1-0 lead. In the top of the 2nd, JT Realmuto hit a solo home run for a 2-0 lead. The Brewers scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 2nd on a Bryce Turang RBI single, Tyrone Taylor RBI double, and Christian Yelich RBI single to take a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the 5th, Carlos Santana hit a 2-run home run, Mark Canha hit an RBI double, and Bryce Turang hit an RBI single to take a 7-2 lead. In the top of the 6th, Trea Turner hit a solo home run to make the score 7-3. Nick Castellanos brought in a run in the top of the 8th on a sacrifice fly to make the score 7-4. The Phillies scored 1 run in the 9th on a Schwarber single but could not muster the comeback as they fell 7-5.
Aaron Nola finished with 4.2 innings, 5 strikeouts, 3 walks, and 7 earned runs on 8 hits. The Phillies had 7 hits as a team, led by JT Realmuto (2 for 4 with a home run, 2 runs, and an RBI), Kyle Schwarber (2 for 4 with a home run, 2 RBI, and a run), and Trea Turner (2 for 5 with a home run, 2 runs, and an RBI).
9/3 @ Milwaukee Brewers - W (4-2)
Ranger Suarez took the mound against Wade Miley in the series finale with the Phillies looking to avoid the sweep. William Contreras hit a solo homer in the bottom of the 1st to give Milwaukee a 1-0 lead. Mark Canha hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 3rd, taking a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the 6th, Nick Castellanos hit an RBI double, shortening the deficit to 2-1. Alec Bohm and JT Realmuto hit back-to-back solo home runs in the top of the 7th, followed by a Trea Turner RBI single later in the frame, giving Philly a 4-2 lead. Both bullpens kept the remaining innings scoreless and Craig Kimbrel closed down the 9th, earning his 22nd save of the season.
In his first start since returning from the IL, Ranger Suarez went 4 innings with 5 strikeouts, 2 walks, and 2 earned runs on 5 hits. Hoffman, Dominguez, Strahm, Alvardo, and Kimbrel combined to pitch 5 scoreless out of the bullpen. The Phillies had 6 hits as a team, led by Trea Turner (2 for 5 with an RBI). Turner extended his hitting streak to 14 consecutive games.
9/4 @ San Diego Padres - W (9-7)
Taijuan Walker got the start against veteran left-hander Rich Hill. The Phillies took a 3-0 lead in the top of the 1st on an 3-RBI double by Alec Bohm. Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a solo homer in the bottom of the 1st to make the score 3-1. The Phillies scored 3 more in the bottom of the 2nd on an Edmundo Sosa solo shot and Trea Turner 2-run homer to take a 6-1 lead.
Rich Hill was removed from the game after just 1.1 innings. The Phils added 2 runs in top of the 3rd on a Cristian Pache RBI triple and a Sosa RBI double as the game looked out of hand. The Padres scored 3 in the bottom of the 4th on a Trent Grisham RBI single and a 2-RBI single by Ha-Seong Kim, making the score 8-4. Kyle Schwarber hit a solo home run, his 40th of the season, to give the Phillies a 9-4 lead in the top of the 5th. Kim hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 6th to make the score 9-5. The Padres made things interesting in the bottom of the 7th by scoring 2 on a sacrifice fly and RBI double by Gary Sanchez.
Jose Alvarado got out of a jam in the bottom of the 9th to earn the save as the Phillies won 9-7. Taijuan Walker finished with 5 innings, 4 strikeouts, 3 walks, and 4 earned runs on 5 hits. The Phillies offense had 16 hits as a team, led by Alec Bohm (3 for 5 with a double and 3 RBI), Bryson Stott (4 for 5 with a run), and Kyle Schwarber (2 for 3 with a home run, 3 walks, 3 runs, and an RBI).
9/5 @ San Diego Padres - L (0-8)
Michael Lorenzen got the start against Pedro Avila. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the 4th when the Padres scored 3 on a Fernando Tatis Jr. solo homer and a defensive error. San Diego scored 4 more in the bottom of the 6th on a Juan Soto RBI single, Xander Bogaerts RBI single, Luis Campusano RBI single, and a fielder’s choice.
A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 8th extended the Padres’ lead to 8-0. Lorenzen finished with 6 innings, 1 strikeout, 3 walks, and 7 runs (6 earned) on 8 hits. The Phillies offense was kept quiet all game, as they totaled just 3 hits as a team.
9/6 @ San Diego Padres - W (5-1)
Zach Wheeler got the start against Michael Wacha. Kyle Schwarber hit a lead-off homer in the top of the 1st, his 3rd in 6 games. Bryce Harper broke his cold streak with a 2-RBI double in the 4th to take a 3-0 lead. The Phils added 2 more in the 5th on a Realmuto solo homer and Jake Cave RBI single to go up 5-0. The Padres were able to score a run in the bottom of the 9th off Matt Strahm on a Garrett Cooper RBI single.
Wheeler was excellent on the mound, finishing with 6 innings, 7 strikeouts, 2 walks, and 0 runs on 1 hit. Dominguez and Hoffman each threw hitless innings out of the bullpen as the Phillies’ staff held the Padres to 3 hits in the game. The Phillies had 12 hits as a team and every player in the lineup had at least 1 hit. Schwarber was 2 for 4 with a homer, walk, RBI, and 2 runs, Realmuto was 2 for 4 with a homer, walk, RBI, and a run, and Stott was 2 for 4 with a walk.
Looking Ahead
The Phillies begin Week 23 of the season with a 3-game series at home against the Marlins (72-62) over the weekend. They remain at home for a 4-game series (in 3 days) with the Braves (91-48) Monday through Wednesday, followed by an off-day Thursday.
