Phillies Report: (Extended) Week 14

The Phillies finish their past week (and change) of baseball with a 5-4 record over 9 games. They lost 2 of 3 against the Nats at home, swept the Rays in a 3-game series in Tampa, and lost 2 of 3 against the Marlins in Miami. Over the 9 games for the week, they outscored opponents 48-32. The long week overall was less successful than hoped for, but the highlight of the week was a sweep of the Rays on the road and the extension of a 13 game road winning streak. They are 6-4 in their last 10 games and remain in 3rd place in the NL East, with a 48-41 record.

The Phillies are currently a half game out of the final wild card position. They are 23-9 in the last 32 games as we head into the All-Star break. The Phillies coaching staff will be leading the National League team, and Nick Castellanos and Craig Kimbrel will represent the club on the field for the mid-summer classic.

Results:

6/30 vs. Washington Nationals - L (1-2)

Christopher Sanchez got the start against Josiah Gray in what would be a low-scoring affair to kick off the series with the Nationals. Stone Garrett hit a 2-run home run in the top of the 2nd to give the Nationals a 2-0 lead. In the bottom half of the second, Alec Bohm hit an RBI single to score Stott and make the score 2-1. Josiah Gray proved too much to handle from there on out, as he was able to manage himself out of jams and prevent runs from crossing the plate.

Christopher Sanchez had another very solid outing for the Phillies, throwing 6 innings with 6 strikeouts, 2 runs allowed (1 earned), and 7 hits. Gray was taken out after 6 innings, and the Phillies just couldn’t manage to score off the Nats’ relievers. The Phillies had 8 hits as team, highlighted by two-hit games from Stott, Bohm, and Harper.

7/1 vs. Washington Nationals - W (19-4)

Zach Wheeler took the mound against young left-hander Mackenzie Gore. The Nationals took the first lead of the game briefly in the top of the 2nd, but Bohm was able to equalize with an RBI single in the bottom half. The game would soon get out of hand from there, as the Phillies scored 6 runs in the 3rd inning, 4 runs in the 4th, and 8 runs in the 5th. After 5 innings, the Philles led 19-4, where interestingly enough the score would remain after 3 and a half more innings.

The Phillies scored 19 runs on 18 hits and 5 walks. They also had 4 home runs and 5 doubles. It was the first time the Phillies have scored 19 or more runs in a game since April 7, 2018. Alec Bohm had a career day, going 4 for 5 with 2 home runs, 6 RBI, and 3 runs. Castellanos went 3 for 4 with a home run, double, 3 RBI and 2 runs. Schwarber went 2 for 5 including a grand slam, a walk, and 3 runs scored. Zach Wheeler finished the day with 5 innings, 6 strikeouts, and 4 earned runs. Andrew Vasquez and Dylan Covey each threw 2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

7/2 vs. Washington Nationals - L (4-5)

Ranger Suarez got the start versus Trevor Williams in a rubber match for the series. Just hours before All-Star reserves were announced, Nick Castellanos hit a solo home-run in the 1st inning and just two batters later, JT Realmuto hit a 2-run home run to put the Phillies up 3-0. The Phillies lead was erased quickly on a Stone Garrett grand slam in the top of the 3rd. Jeimar Candelario added a run on a solo shot in the 5th inning.

Trailing by 2 in the 7th, Castellanos hit an RBI double to make the score 5-4, but the comeback would remain out of reach as the Nats bullpen closed it down. Ranger Suarez finished with 5 earned runs on 7 hits in 5.1 innings. Bryce Harper was 2 for 2 with 2 walks and Nick Castellanos was 2 for 5 with a home run, double, and 2 RBI. Castellanos was announced later as the only Phillie to make the All-Star game.

7/4 @ Tampa Bay Rays - W  (3-1)

Aaron Nola got the start against former Phillie teammate Zach Eflin in the series opener in Tampa. Alec Bohm put the Phils on the board in the 2nd when he laced a line drive in the left-center gap for an RBI double to score Stott. The score would stay at 1-0 for a while as both pitchers were dealing. The Phillies added a run in the 7th on an RBI single by Bryson Stott and added another the following inning on a Harper sac fly to go up 3-0.

Nola started the 8th inning, recorded the first out, but was removed after allowing a solo home run to Wander Franco. Jose Alvarado finished the 8th frame and Craig Kimbrel shut down the 9th for his 13th save. Nola had all of his stuff working, and finished with 7.1 innings pitched, 1 earned run on just 5 hits, and 12 strikeouts. Both Bryce Harper and Bryson Stott were 2 for 4 with a double.

7/5 @ Tampa Bay Rays - W (8-4)

Taijuan Walker took the mound against Zack Littell who started a bullpen game for the Rays. The game became a back-and-forth affair in the early innings. The Rays scored 2 in the 1st inning on a Brandon Lowe double to go up 2-0. The Phils tied it up in the 2nd on RBI singles by Alec Bohm and Darick Hall. The Rays then took the lead again in the bottom of the 2nd on an RBI single by Francisco Mejia. JT Realmuto hit an RBI single in the top of the 3rd to tie the game at 3-3. The Rays took the lead yet again in the bottom of the 3rd on a Luke Raley solo home run.

In the bottom of the 5th, Trea Turner hit a solo home run, Bryson Stott hit an RBI single, and Nick Castellanos hit a solo home run (his 13th on the year) to give the Phils a 6-4 lead. Brandon Marsh added 2 more on a 2 RBI single in the 7th which would be the last of the scoring for either team. Walker got off to a shaky start, but settled in after the 3rd and finished with a line of 7 innings, 8 strikeouts, and 4 earned runs on 5 hits and 5 walks. It was his 10th win of the season, which is currently tied for the NL lead. Soto and Hoffman each threw scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

It was an impressive day for the Phillies lineup, who totalled 17 hits and 3 stolen bases. Stott was 4 for 5 with a double, RBI, 2 runs, and a stolen base. Realmuto was 3 for 4 with a double, walk, RBI, and 2 runs. Bohm was 3 for 4 with a walk, RBI, run, and stolen base. Turner and Harper each had 2 hit ball games.

7/6 @ Tampa Bay Rays - W (3-1)

Christopher Sanchez took the mound for the Phillies against Shawn Armstrong as the Rays used the bullpen game strategy for the 2nd straight game. Although the over/under was 9.5 runs, the game turned out to be very a low-scoring, tight affair. The first run of the game came in the top of the 5th on a Darick Hall solo home-run to give the Phillies a 1-0 lead. The Rays equalized in the bottom of the 5th on an Isaac Paredes solo home run. The game would remain tied through the 9th, and go into extra innings.

In the top of the 11th, with runners on 1st and 2nd, Schwarber hit a single to right field to score 1. Trea Turner, the next batter, hit a liner into right field to score Garrett Stubbs. The Phils pitching was excellent on the day. Sanchez finished with 6 innings, 2 strikeouts, 0 walks, and 1 earned on 4 hits. Marte, Alvarado, and Kimbrel pitched the 7th, 8th, and 9th innings and each put up scoreless (and hitless) frames. Matt Strahm earned the win as he pitched a scoreless 10th inning, and closed out the game in the 11th after the Phillies took the lead. Schwarber and Turner combined for 4 of the team’s 6 hits.

The Phillies have now won 12 games on the road in a row as they head to Miami for 3 games. The Phillies sweep of the Rays is the first time they’ve been swept at home in 2023.

7/7 @ Miami Marlins - W (4-3)

Zach Wheeler got the start for the Phillies against Sandy Alcantara. The Marlins put 2 on the board in the 2nd inning on an RBI single and a fielder’s choice. Garrett Cooper hit a solo shot in the 4th to go up 3-0. JT Realmuto hit a solo home run in the 6th to make the score 3-1. The score remained 3-1 into the 9th inning when Marlin’s closer AJ Puk entered the game. Realmuto led off the inning with a single, Stott struck out, then Alec Bohm hit a line drive down the left field line for an RBI double. Josh Harrison struck out and then Cristian Pache pinch hit for Brandon Marsh. Pache hit a fly ball to center field that just made it over the wall to put the Phillies up 4-3.

Craig Kimbrel came on in the bottom of the 9th and shut it down to earn his 14th save of the season. Zach Wheeler threw 6 innings with 7 strikeouts, no walks, and 3 earned on 7 hits. Jeff Hoffman threw 2 scoreless innings in relief to keep the game within reach. Realmuto was 2 for 3 with a home run, RBI, and 2 runs. With the win, the Phillies extended their road winning streak to 13 games.

7/8 @ Miami Marlins - L (3-5)

Ranger Suarez got the start versus Braxton Garrett. Trea Turner hit a solo shot in the top of the first, but Jorge Soler hit a solo shot of his own in the bottom of the 1st to tie the game. The Marlins added 2 more in the 1st on a 2 RBI single from Dane Myers. The Phillies would tie the game in the top of the 2nd on a Cristian Pache double and Kyle Scwarber ground-out. Soler hit a sac fly for an RBI to give the Marlins a 4-3 lead in the 4th and Luis Arraez hit an RBI single in the 7th. The Phillies were unable to score any more runs after the 2nd as Garrett settled in and the bullpen kept the door closed.

Suarez finished with 5.2 innings pitched, 4 strikeouts, 4 walks, and 4 runs (3 earned).  The Phillies offense scattered 7 total hits. Bohm was 2 for 4 with a run. Bryce Harper exited the game after his 2nd at-bat in which he was hit by a pitch on his surgically repaired right elbow. It appears as though it's nothing serious and he should return following the All-star break. Craig Kimbrel was added to the NL All-star roster and will be the second Phillie representing the club in Seattle.

7/9 @ Miami Marlins - L (3-7)

Aaron Nola took the mound against Jesus Luzardo in a series finale and last game prior to the All-Star break. Fresh off possibly his best start in Tampa Bay, Nola struggled a bit and was hurt by the long ball. Jesus Sanchez hit a 2-run shot in the 1st, Dane Myers and Bryan De La Cruz each hit a solo shot in the 3rd, and Jean Segura hit an RBI single in the same frame. Edmundo Sosa hit a 2-run homer in the 5th to make the score 5-2. The Marlins added a run in the 7th and the 8th on RBI singles to extend their lead to 7-2. The Phillies scored a run in the 9th on a ground out, but would lose the game 7-3.

Aaron Nola finished the game with 6 innings, 6 strikeouts, and 5 runs allowed (4 earned). Matt Strahm and Gregory Soto each threw an inning out of the bullpen and allowed 1 run. Bryson Stott was 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI. The Phillies lost what was a huge series against the Marlins, who hold a 3.5 game lead over the Phillies.
