The Phillies finish their past week of baseball with a 2-5 record over 7 games on the road. They split a 4-game series with the Braves in Atlanta and were swept by the Mets in a 3-game series earlier this week. Over the 7 games for the week, they were outscored by opponents 20-30. Splitting a 4-game series with the Braves felt like a victory, and the Phillies had a chance to make week 9 an overall success heading to New York, but that would not be the case. The Phillies lost all 3 games to the Mets and scored just 3 runs in the entire series. The offense struggled to put runners in scoring position at all, and when they did they failed to bring those runners home. A positive is that the pitching staff as a whole looked good in New York, but with nothing to show for it. They are 3-7 in their last 10 games and are now 25-31 for the season. The Phillies hope to turn things around in the nation’s capital as they get set for a 3-game series with the Nationals beginning Friday.

5/25 vs. Atlanta Braves - L (5-8)
Aaron Nola got the start against Braves left-hander Dylan Dodd in what would be an exciting back and forth matchup between the division foes. Austin Riley opened the scoring early in the 1st with a 2-run home run. The Phillies responded by putting up 3 runs in the 2nd thanks to a 2-run homer by Alec Bohm and an RBI double from Bryson Stott. Marcell “Ozuna, from the Braves” hit a solo shot in the 2nd to make it a 3-3 ballgame. Atlanta added a run in the 4th to go up 1, and Bryce Harper equalized with a solo bomb into the Chop House in the 5th. Riley hit his second homer of the day to give Atlanta a 5-4 lead in the 5th. With runners on first and second, Schwarber ripped a double down the right field foul line, scoring Harper from second, but a nice relay threw out Castellanos at home as the game went to the bottom of the 7th tied 5-5. Soto came in to pitch in the bottom of the 8th and gave up 3 runs, which would effectively be all she wrote as Iglesias slammed the door for the save in the 9th. Nola went 6 innings with 5 earned and 7 strikeouts. Harper was 3-4 with a home run. Bohm and Castellanos both went 2-4.
5/26 vs. Atlanta Braves - W (6-4)
Taijaun Walker took the mound for the Phillies against Braves rookie left-hander Jared Shuster. It may not have looked pretty, but Walker gave the Phils what they needed, a quality start, going 6.2 innings, and allowing 3 earned runs. Nick Castellanos hit a 2 RBI triple in the 3rd inning to get the scoring started. The Braves answered, scoring 1 in the 3rd and 2 in the 5th on a 2-run home run by Michael Harris, giving the Braves a 3-2 lead. Brandon Marsh hit a 2 RBI single in the 6th, Trea Turner hit a RBI double in the 7th, and Harper brought in a run on a sac fly in the 7th to give the Phils a 6-3 lead. “Ozuna, from the Braves” hit a solo homer in the 8th to bring the score to 6-4. Craig Kimbrel came on in the 9th to earn his 400th career save, in the city where his prolific career began.Stott was 2-3 with 2 runs and 3 stolen bases, and Castellanos was 2-5 with 2 RBI.
5/27 vs. Atlanta Braves - W (2-1)
Zach Wheeler started the game against former Phillie Charlie Morton, a matchup that would prove to be a good, old-fashioned pitchers duel. Wheeler would go on to have what was undoubtedly his best outing of the year, finishing with 8 innings pitched, 0 earned runs, and 12 strikeouts. It was a dazzling performance, and a much needed one as the Phillies offense was stymied throughout the game. The first runs of the game came in the 5th inning when Stott hit a sac fly to score Marsh. Turner then added a run with a RBI double to make the score 2-0. The score would remain 2-0 for the rest of the game until Sean Murphy hit a solo homer off Kimbrel in the 9th, who secured another save. Castellanos and Kody Clemens both had multi hit games for the Phillies
5/28 vs. Atlanta Braves - L (4-11)
Recently acquired Dylan Covey took the mound in a matchup against Spencer Strider on Sunday Night Baseball and it went just about as good as one might expect, actually it probably went even worse than expected. Covey allowed 7 runs (5 earned) in just two-thirds of an inning before being taken out of the game. The Phillies were able to manage a few hard hit balls off Strider, but certainly not enough to overcome such a deficit. Matt Olson and Austin Riley both hit home runs in the dreaded 7-run 1st inning. In the top of the 2nd, Schwarber laced a ball to dead center field that was robbed by an amazing catch from Michael Harris. Marsh hit a 2-run home run in the 3rd to make it 7-2. The Braves added 3 more in the 5th on an Acuna triple and Olson’s second homer of the night. Schwarber again made great contact on a ball in the 7th that would be too deep to bring back for his 13th home run of the season, making the score 10-4. The Braves would add one more in the 7th on an RBI single by Riley. It was a solid overall effort from the bullpen, considering they threw 7.1 innings and allowed 4 runs.
5/30 vs. New York Mets - L (0-2)
Ranger Suarez took the mound against Kodai Senga in what would be a low-scoring affair. The outing for Suarez for a great sign as it was his first quality start of the season. He finished with 2 earned runs and 4 strikeouts over 6.2 innings. Senga was masterful on the mound, throwing 7 innings and allowing just 1 hit, 0 runs, and 9 strikeouts. In the top of the 4th, Castellanos hit a deep fly to left center that was over the fence and taken back on a robbery by Brandon Nimmo. Francisco Lindor hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 4th inning and the Mets added an insurance run on a 2-out RBI single from Eduardo Escobar in the 7th. As a team, the Phillies totaled just 2 hits in the game and failed to have a runner even reach second base.
5/31 vs. New York Mets - L (1-4)
Aaron Nola got the start for the Phillies against Carlos Carrasco of the Mets. Edmundo Sosa started off the scoring with a solo home run in the top of the 3rd inning. Mark Canha then responded with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the 3rd. The Mets would add 2 more runs on a single in the 4th inning by who else but Mark Canha again to make the score 4-1. There would be no more scoring for the remaining 5 innings. Former Phillie David Robertson secured his 2nd save in as many games. Nola had a decent outing, throwing 6 innings with 4 earned runs, 4 hits, 5 strikeouts, and 3 walks. Unlike last night, the Phillies actually hit the baseball, but couldn’t find a timely hit to drive in runs. They had 9 hits compared to the Mets 5. Stott, Harper, Marsh, and Clemens all had 2 hits a piece.
6/1 vs. New York Mets - L (2-4)
Taijuan Walker got the start against his former team and a familiar foe of the Phillies, Max Scherzer. Walker threw 4 innings, allowing 3 runs on 2 hits and 3 walks. He was pulled early from the start which had some fearing injury, but it appears his early departure was due to lacking velocity and control. The Phillies scored 2 runs in the top of the 1st thanks to an overthrow and a Castellanos sacrifice fly off Scherzer and things were looking optimistic. The Mets scored 1 in the 3rd and then 2 more in the 4th by the newest Phillie killer, Mark Canha (welcome to the club) to make the score 3-2. The Mets would add an insurance run in the 6th and similar to many games this week, that would be all for the scoring for the Phillies. Scherzer settled in after the 1st inning, going 7 innings with 1 earned, 1 walk, and 9 strikeouts.
