Phillies Report: Week 11

The Phillies finish their past week of baseball with a 5-2 record over 7 games. They won 2 of 3 at home against the Dodgers over the weekend and won 3 of 4 in Phoenix against the Diamondbacks. Over the 7 games for the week, they outscored opponents 44-35. The week was yet another success on the back of a 5 and 1 week last week. They are 8-2 in their last 10 games and remain in 3rd place in the NL East.

The offense continued to be a strong point for the Phillies this week. The starting pitching aside from the 5th spot in the rotation also continued to be very effective. The 5th spot in the rotation, which has been filled by a bullpen game as of lately, is definitely a point of concern moving forward, but the Phillies are certainly clicking in most facets of the game. The Phillies are now 35 and 34 on the season as they push back above .500. They are 7.5 games behind the 1st place Braves and 1.5 games out of a wild card spot.

Results:

6/9 vs. Los Angeles Dodgers - W (5-4)

Ranger Suarez got the start for the Phillies against Dodgers reliever Victor Gonzalez who filled the “opener” role. Michael Grove relieved Gonzalez after recording 2 outs. JD Martinez got the scoring started in the 1st inning with an RBI double. The Phillies evened the score in the 3rd on an RBI single by Bryce Harper. The Phillies added 3 runs in the 5th inning thanks to an RBI double by Castellanos, a wild pitch, and an RBI single by Trea Turner.

What felt like a comfortable 3-run lead was erased very quickly in the 7th inning thanks to back-to-back home runs by Mookie Betts (2-run) and familiar Phillie-killer Freddie Freeman. The game remained tied at 4-4 until the bottom of the 9th inning. With two outs and no runners on, Kyle Schwarber roped a Ferguson breaking ball to deep right field for a walk-off homer. It would be the 2nd consecutive walk-off victory for the Phils, and their 6th win in a row.

Suarez finished with a solid line of 6 innings pitched, 8 strikeouts, 2 walks, 4 hits, and 1 earned run. Turner was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Schwarber was 2 for 3 with 2 walks and a home run.

6/10 vs. Los Angeles Dodgers - L (0-9)

Aaron Nola took the mound against Dodgers’ rookie Bobby Miller in what would turn out to be a lopsided affair. Nola did not look at his best, but was able to eat up innings and pitch fairly late into the game. He finished with 6.1 innings pitched, 6 earned runs on 7 hits, and 7 strikeouts. The Dodgers scored 9 runs in total in part thanks to big days from Mookie Betts and David Peralta.

In a great case of “something you don’t see everyday”, manager Rob Thomson was ejected after arguing with umpires who had taken issue with how many baseballs Aaron Nola was discarding. Miller continued the very hot start to his career, throwing 6 innings of shutout baseball with 7 strikeouts, 3 walks, and 3 hits. Andre Jackson threw 3 great innings out of the bullpen, attributing to a combined shutout of the Phillies. The Phillies had 6 hits in the game, half of which belonged to Bryson Stott who went 3 for 4 with a double.

6/11 vs. Los Angeles Dodgers - W (7-3)

Taijuan Walker got the ball for the Phillies against reliever Caleb Ferguson, who would be the Dodgers’ “opener” in a bullpen game. The Phillies took an early lead on a Harper sacrifice fly in the 1st and scored 2 more in the 3rd on a 2-RBI single by Bryson Stott. Freddie Freeman struck yet again in the 6th inning with a solo home run, making the score 3-1. The Phillies got 1 more on a bunt single from backup catcher Garrett Stubbs. Jason Heyward then made it a 2-run game after a solo shot in the 7th.

The Phillies added 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th on a 2-run Castellanos homer and an RBI single by Kody Clemens. The Dodgers added 1 more in the 8th, but it wouldn’t be enough to mount a comeback as Kimbrel shut the door in the 9th. Taijuan Walker had another effective outing, throwing 5 innings with 5 strikeouts, 2 walks, and 0 runs allowed. The Phillies had 13 hits as a team, led by big days from Trea Turner (3-5, 3 runs) and Bryson Stott (2-3, 2 runs, 2 RBI).

6/12 vs. Arizona Diamondbacks - L  (8-9)

Matt Strahm got the start as the “opener” in a bullpen game against Tommy Henry in what would be a game that featured lots of excitement. D-backs stud Corbin Carroll was hit by a pitch in both of his first two plate appearances, and D-backs manager was ejected after arguing with both JT Realmuto and the umpire. Arizona scored one in the 1st inning on a sac fly and Realmuto responded with a solo homer in the 2nd to tie the game. The Phils would score 4 in the 3rd on a 2-RBI triple from Realmuto, RBI double by Bohm, and an RBI single by Josh Harrison.

The D-backs scored 2 in the 3rd and 2 in the 4th to tie the game up, 5-5. Arizona broke up the tie in the 6th inning scoring 4 runs on a sac fly and 3-run Evan Longoria home run. The Phillies did not go down quietly, scoring 2 in the 7th on a double by Harper and single by Bohm. They still trailed by 2 runs in the top of the 9th when they were able to score 1 on a Stott single. Kody Clemens pinch hit and roped a deep line drive down the right field line. Broadcasters thought it was fair for a 3-run homerun, but after review the ball was indeed foul. Clemens then struck out to end the game.

The Phillies hit the ball well once again, totaling 13 hits as a team. No offensive performances on the day were more impressive than that of JT Realmuto, who went 4 for 4, hitting for the cycle. Realmuto became the first player in Phillies history to hit for the cycle since David Bell in 2004.

6/13 vs. Arizona Diamondbacks - W (15-3)

Zach Wheeler got the start for the Phillies against Zach Davies. Wheeler threw the baseball very well yet again, and combined with an offensive explosion, this game would not be a close one. Kyle Schwarber led off the game with a solo home run in the top of the 1st and the Phils didn’t look back from there. They scored 3 more in the 1st. With 20 hits as a team, many players had good days at the plate. Stott was 3 for 5 with 2 RBI, Castellanos was 2 for 6 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI, Realmuto was 2 for 4 with a double, triple, and 3 runs scored, and Trea Turner was 2 for 3 with 2 runs and 2 stolen bases.

Wheeler finished the day with another very effective performance. He had 7 strikeouts over 6 innings pitched, allowing just 1 run, 1 walk, and 4 hits. Luis Ortiz pitched the remaining 3 innings over the game, and did his job. He allowed 2 runs over the 3 innings.

Of note: Castellanos stated on the radio that the Phillies returned to listening to the 2022 “Phil’s Win” playlist, including “Dancing on My Own”. At the time of writing, the Phillies are 10-2 since returning to the playlist.

6/14 vs. Arizona Diamondbacks - W (4-3)

Ranger Suarez got the start for the Phillies against Merrill Kelly in what was expected to be a good pitching matchup. The Phillies took a 1-0 nothing lead in the 2nd on a fielder’s choice and added another in the 3rd in the same manner. Pitching on both sides would keep the offenses quiet, until JT Realmuto hit a solo home run in the 6th and the Phillies led 3-0.

In the bottom of the 8th with Seranthony Dominguez on the mound, Christian Walker hit a 3-run, game-tying home run. The game would go into extras as pitching on both sides kept the door closed in the 9th. Castellanos hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th that scored Brandon Marsh and gave the Phillies a one-run lead. Jose Alvarado slammed the door shut in the bottom of the 10th, as the Phillies won 4-3.

Ranger Suarez put up yet another excellent pitching performance, going 7 innings with 7 strikeouts, 4 hits, 2 walks, and 0 runs allowed. In his last three starts, Ranger has thrown 20 innings, 18 strikeouts to 5 walks, and has an ERA of 0.90.

6/15 vs. Arizona Diamondbacks - W (5-4)

Aaron Nola got the start on the mound versus Ryne Nelson. The Phils jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the 2nd, thanks to a Bryson Stott solo shot and an infield RBI single by Trea Turner. They added another run in the top of the third with an RBI double from Bohm. The D-backs responded with 4 runs in the bottom of the 3rd off Nola to make the score 4-3. The Phillies got two back in the top of the 4th off an RBI double from Schwarber and an RBI single by Harper.

Nola settled back into the groove after the 3rd inning, allowing no more runs for the rest of his outing. Soto, Dominguez, and Kimbrel pitched great out of the bullpen, with Kimbrel earning his 10th save of the season. Nola finished with 6.2 innings, 9 strikeouts, 1 walk, and 4 earned.Stott had a big day, going 2 for 5 with a homer. The Phillies compiled 13 total hits as a team as Bohm, Castellanos, and Turner also had 2-hit ball games.

Injury Updates

Andrew Painter - Painter began throwing 20-pitch bullpens on June 10th. He threw one Tuesday and will do so again Friday the 16th. There is still no real timeline on Painter’s return.

Darick Hall - Hall continues to play at Triple-A Lehigh Valley and it appears as though there is no rush to bring him back to the big leagues after he becomes fully healthy. Kody Clemens has done a solid job and Bohm is back playing again.

Christian Pache - Pache is on a rehab assignment with triple-A Lehigh Valley and is still making progress with the health of his knee. It is likely that he will not be rushed back to the majors unless something changes.
