Phillies Report: Week 10

The Phillies finish their past week of baseball with a 5-1 record over 6 games. They won 2 of 3 in Washington over the weekend and swept the Tigers in a 3-game series at home. Over the 6 games for the week, they outscored opponents 33-18. The week was undoubtedly a success as the Phillies have won 5 in a row and are now 3rd in the NL East.

Throughout the first 4 games of the week the offense looked impressive as many hitters are now starting to click throughout the lineup. Another good sign throughout especially the latter half of the week was the starting pitching. In the Tigers series, the Phillies starters all went at least 7 innings and allowed 0 earned runs. They are 5-5 in their last 10 games and are now 30-32 for the season. The Phillies hope to continue their run of good baseball as they gear up for what certainly will be a more challenging week, which gets started with a 3-game series against the LA Dodgers at home.

Results:

6/2 vs. Washington Nationals - L (7-8)

Zach Wheeler got the start for the Phillies against Josiah Gray of the Nationals. Wheeler's outing would be a short one, allowing 7 earned runs on 8 hits over 3.2 innings. The Nationals offense got to Wheeler early, scoring 2 in the first and 4 in the 2nd. Castellanos launched a solo shot in the 4th and after a Luis Garcia solo shot to counter, the Nats led 7-1 after 4. The Phillies chances were looking bleak until the 6th inning when Castellanos hit his 2nd homer of the game and Marsh added an RBI single, the Phillies then trailed 7-4.

Castellanos drove in 2 more runs on a single in the 7th and the Phils tied the ballgame at 7-7 on an RBI from Schwarber in the top of the 8th. After stealing a base to get into scoring position, Alex Call scored on a Lane Thomas single off of pitcher Connor Brogdon, and the Nats would be victorious after a Kyle Finnegan save. Castellanos had an insane game, going 4-5 with 2 homers, a double, 5 RBI and a stolen base.

6/3 vs. Washington Nationals - W (4-2)

Matt Strahm got the start in what would essentially be a bullpen game for the Phillies against the Nationals and young starter Mackenzie Gore. Strahm got the job done, finished 2 innings with no runs and passed the ball to the rest of the bullpen. Josh Harrison opened the scoring in the 2nd with a RBI single. Trea Turner hit a RBI double in the 3rd to make the score 2-0.

The Nats scored 2 in the 4th to make it tied at 2-2. The Phils took the lead in the 6th on a Realmuto solo shot and added a valuable insurance run in the 8th on a Marsh sac fly. Andrew Vazquez, Yunior Marte, Gregory Soto, Seranthony Dominguez, and Craig Kimbrel all threw 1 inning each and allowed a combined 0 runs. Kimbrel got the save in the 9th, as the Phils won 4-2.

6/4 vs. Washington Nationals - W (11-3)

Ranger Suarez got the start for the Phillies against right-hander Trevor Williams for the Nationals. JT Realmuto put the Phils on the board with a solo home run in the 2ns. The Nats tied it up at 1 in the 4th. The Phillies would take the lead in the 5th on a Drew Ellis solo home run and would never look back. Schwarber hit a 3-run bomb in the 6th, Marsh hit a sac-fly in the 7th, followed by a 2-run home run from Ellis. Scwarber hit another 3-run homer in the top of the 9th (welcome back June Schwarber).

Ranger had another great outing following his come-back start last week. He scattered 8 hits over 7 innings of work, allowing 1 run. After Brogdon allowed 2 to score in the 9th, the Phils won by a score of 11-3. Aside from Ellis, Realmuto, and Schwarber, Castellanos also had a nice day at the plate, going 3-5 with a walk.

6/5 vs. Detroit Tigers - W  (8-3)

Aaron Nola got the start versus Joey Wentz of the Tigers as the Phillies returned to Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies bats continued their hot streak, putting up 1 run in the 1st inning thanks to an RBI single from Trea Turner. Castellanos added an RBI double in the 2nd and Turner hit a solo homer in the 3rd, giving the Phillies a 3-0 lead. The Phils added 2 more runs in the 5th on an RBI single by Harper and Turner's 2nd home run of the game. Aaron Nola continued his no-hitter into the 7th inning, when former Phillie Nick Maton struck with a 3-run homer, making the score 5-3.

A 2 RBI double from Realmuto and RBI single from Sosa added 3 runs for the Phils in the bottom of the 7th inning, making it 8-3 in favor of the Phillies. Nola had a masterful outing, throwing 7 innings, allowing 3 runs (0 earned), with 12 strikeouts and only 1 hit. Dominguez and Vazquez combined to throw 2 shutout innings to close it out. Trea Turner had a big game, going 4-5 with 2 home runs, 3 RBI, and 3 runs. He seems to have turned a corner since being moved into the cleanup spot of the order.

6/6 vs. Detroit Tigers - W (1-0)

Taijuan Walker took the mound versus Tyler Alexander, a reliever fulfilling the “opener” role for the Tigers. Walker struck out the side in the top of the 1st, and in the bottom of the inning, the Phillies lead off man Kyle Schwarber hit a solo home run to right-center field. Oddly enough, the game was essentially decided at that point, as no more runs would cross the plate for the remainder of the game. Walker would go on to have his best start thus far in a Phillies uniform. He finished with 7 innings, 2 hits, 3 walks, 8 strikeouts, and no runs allowed.

Dominguez and Kimbrel both looked great out of the bullpen, combining for 5 strikeouts over 2 innings and 0 runs. Kimbrel earned his 9th save of the season. The Tigers staff did a great job of keeping Phillies’ hitters at bay as they only compiled 3 hits as a team, but thanks to the big hit by Schwarber, that would be enough to win by a score of 1-0.

6/8 (postponed from 6/7) vs. Detroit Tigers - W (3-2)

Zach Wheeler got the start versus Tigers’ reliever Tyler Holton who served as the “opener”. Wheeler was excellent on the mound, carrying a no-hitter into the 8th inning. His fastball velocity was steadily at 97-98, as he looked like the Wheeler Phillies fans have come to know. He finished with 7.1 innings pitched, 8 strikeouts, 1 walk, 1 hit, and 0 earned runs. The game remained scoreless until the 6th inning, when Kyle Scwarber scored on a sacrifice fly by Bryce Harper. In the 8th, Jake Marisnick reached base on an error, and would later score on a bunt single in which the first baseman crashed and Stott was unable to cover first base in time, making the score 1-1.

In the top of the 9th inning with Kimbrel pitching, Nick Maton hit an RBI single to give the Tigers the lead, 2-1. Harper led off the bottom of the 9th with a double and the bases were loaded with 1 out and Brandon Marsh at the plate. Marsh hit a sacrifice fly that scored Harper to tie the game. Kody Clemens then roped a line drive into right field that would score Trea Turner from second as the Phillies won in walk-off fashion.
