Phillies Report: Week 8

The Phillies finish their past week of baseball with a 3-3 record over a six game homestand. They won two of three over the weekend versus the Cubs and lost two of three to the D-backs Monday through Wednesday. Over the six games for the week, they were outscored by opponents 27-29. After a big comeback walk off win on Wednesday, the Phillies hope to carry that momentum as they travel to Atlanta this weekend. They are 3-7 in their last 10 games and are now 23-26 for the season. They have been in a rough spell as of late and it is worth noting that they are glaringly close to the record of 22-29 that they had when manager Joe Girardi was fired last season.

Results:

5/19 vs. Chicago Cubs - L (1-10)

After a day off and returning to Citizens Bank Park, the Phillies looked to halt a 4-game skid. Ranger Suarez started on the mound against Marcus Stroman. Suarez was taken out after giving up 4 runs over 2 innings of work and 4 strikeouts. Marcus Stroman had a very solid outing, giving up 1 earned over 6 innings. Stroman and the Cubs bullpen kept the Phillies offense at bay all night, as they totaled just 3 total hits in the game. The Cubs would add 4 more runs in the 5th, and 2 in the 9th inning to make the final score 10-1.

5/20 vs. Chicago Cubs - W (12-3)

After an abysmal previous game at the plate for the Phillies, the offense came alive. They totaled 13 hits and scored 12 runs. The bats came out early, putting up 6 runs in the 1st inning thanks to a Kyle Schwarber grand-slam and a 2-run home run by Kody Clemens. They tacked on 2 more in the 3rd and 2 more in the 5th.Lots of Phillies had big days at the plate, including Edmundo Sosa had a big day (3-4, 2 runs, 1 RBI), Bryce Harper (2-3, double, 2 walks), and Bryson Stott (2-4, 2 RBI). Aaron Nola pitched with a comfortable lead all game, and put up an impressive performance (7 IP, 2 earned runs, 10 strikeouts).

5/21 vs. Chicago Cubs - W (2-1)

Taijuan Walker took the mound hoping for a rebound from a rough outing in San Francisco last week. It was a successful rebound start indeed, as he finished 5.1 innings pitched, 0 earned runs, and 3 strikeouts. Offense was hard to come by for both teams, as Justin Steele allowed 0 runs over 6 innings for the Cubs. The stalemate was finally broken in the bottom of the 7th inning when Bryson Stott hit a pinch-hit, 2-run home run. Craig Kimbrel came in to close out the 9th, and got the save after allowing a 2-out, solo shot to Christopher Morel.

5/22 vs. Arizona D-backs - L (3-6)

Zach Wheeler took the mound against Tommy Henry of the D-backs. Arizona put up 3 runs in the 2nd inning to open the scoring in part due to a Lourdes Gurriel solo shot. The Phillies responded in the 4th inning with 2 solo homers from Kyle Schwarber and Bryson Stott to make it 3-2. Arizona extended their lead to 4-2 with a Pavin Smith homer in the 5th. An RBI single by Trea Turner in the 7th brought the game to within 1. The D-backs would later add 1 run in the 8th and 1 more in the 9th for a final score of 6-3. Wheeler finished the day with 3 earned over 6 innings. Jeff Hoffman allowed 1 to cross the plate and Bellati allowed an unearned run in the 9th. The Phillies committed 2 errors in the game, which resulted in 2 total unearned runs.

5/23 vs. Arizona D-backs - L (3-4)

Matt Strahm got the start for the Phillies in a designed “opener” role. He allowed a 2-run home run to Gabriel Moreno in the 2nd to give Arizona a 2-0 lead. Kody Clemens answered with an RBI double in the 2nd to make it 2-1.  Strahm struck out 3 in 2 innings of work before Dylan Covey would take over in the piggy back role. Covey was claimed off waivers on May 20th in an effort to potentially fill a void in the 5th starter role. Covey got off to a shaky start, allowing a run in the 3rd inning, but settled in nicely and got the job done. He finished with 5 innings of work and only 1 run allowed. Down 3-1 in the 7th, the Phillies got something going, scoring 2 runs and tying the game at 3-3. Seranthony Dominguez allowed a lead-off double and an RBI single to Corbin Carroll, making it 4-3 in the 8th inning and the Phillies were unable to mount a comeback.

5/24 vs. Arizona D-backs - W (6-5)

Ranger Suarez got the start for the Phillies and looked to right the ship after a difficult start to his season. The D-backs scored 1 in the 1st, 2 in the 3rd, and 2 more in the 5th. Suarez finished the day with 5 innings pitched, 5 earned runs, and 5 strikeouts. The potential Cy Young candidate was his counterpart in this one, and after 5 consecutive scoreless innings, a sweep of the series was looking very likely for the D-backs. An RBI single by Alec Bohm and a 2 RBI single from Brandon Marsh in the 6th made the score 5-3 and brought the Phillies within contention. Both bullpens shut it down from there until the bottom of the 9th. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th, Bryson Stott hit a single, and Trea Turner stepped up and hit a game-tying 2-run home run. Craig Kimbrel pitched the top of 10th and put up a zero with 1 strikeout. Schwarber was intentionally walked and Clemens followed with a walk to load the bases. Alec Bohm hit a ball to deep right field that got down and the Phillies walked it off with a 6-5 victory. Stott went 3-5, Bohm went 2-5, and Marsh returned to the lineup going 2-5 with 2 RBI.

Injury Updates

Brandon Marsh - There is a bit of concern growing regarding the injury status of Brandon Marsh. He’s been out of the lineup for the multiple games towards the end of the week and was scratched from the lineup prior to Tuesday’s game. As of now it seems like he is being given some time off and rest  to avoid an IL stint. He was back in the starting lineup Wednesday, but his injury status is worth monitoring moving forward.

Jose Alvarado - Alvarado has thrown flat-ground and could begin throwing a bullpen today. He is likely going to be out for at least another 2 weeks or so.

Darick Hall - Hall is progressing well and is getting closer to a rehab stint as he has already begun hitting on the field, running, throwing, and taking ground balls. The next step would be for him to hit off live pitching.
