Phillies Report: Week 7

The Phillies finish their past week of baseball with a 2-4 record over a six game road trip. They won two of three over the weekend versus the Rockies and were swept by the Giants in a three game series Monday through Wednesday. Over the six games for the week, they were outscored by opponents 23-28. The Phillies were on a five game win streak entering Sunday’s game, and now find themselves in the midst of a four game losing streak. They are 5-5 in their last 10 games and are now 20-23 for the season.

Results:

5/12 @ COL - W (6-3)

Taijuan Walker got the start on the bump and allowed 3 earned over six innings. The bullpen took the ball afterwards and that would be it for the scoring for the Rockies. Alec Bohm was 1-3 with a homer, Harper went 2-4 with a double and 2 RBI, and Kyle Schwarber hit a go-ahead 2 run homer in the 7th.

5/13 @ COL - W (7-4)

Ranger Suarez made his season debut on the mound and looked decent. He was locating his fastball well but struggled to find his slider. He battled and was able to limit the damage, allowing 3 earned over four innings. Brogdon, Belatti, Hoffman, and Soto combined to do the job in relief, allowing 1 run (0 earned) in five innings of work. Harper was 2-4 at the plate with a double and a 2 run homer that provided some insurance in the top of the 9th.

5/14 @ COL - L (0-4)

Aaron Nola got the start in this one and allowed four earned over seven innings of work with four strikeouts. The offense just could not come up with the needed big hit in this game, and frustrations with close calls and misfortunes capitulated into a benches clearing chirping match between Bryce Harper and Rockies reliever Jake Bird. The Phillies had 7 hits compared to Colorado’s 6, but also made two errors in the game.

5/15 @ SFG - L (3-6)

Many Phillies fans perhaps that were hoping for a revamped group after a benches clearing situation were disappointed after Monday’s result. The Phillies tried to solve Bailey Falter's “faults” by opting for a Rays-esk opener strategy with Connor Brogdon, who went .2 innings with Falter relieving him. Falter got into some trouble in the 2nd inning, although a critical defensive error by Bryson Stott did not help. The Giants put up six runs in the frame (all unearned) and the Phils couldn’t claw their way back from there. Bohm had a nice day at the plate, going 2-3 with double, homer, and 3 RBI.

*Falter has since been optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The Phillies have yet to share their plans for his next turn in the rotation.

5/16 @ SFG - L (3-4)

Zach Wheeler took the bump in this game and allowed four earned with eight strikeouts over six innings. Seranthony Dominguez and Gregory Soto put up zeros out of the ‘pen in the 7th and 8th innings. Giants starter Alex Cobb only threw 3.1 innings, yet the Phillies bats were mostly quelled throughout the game. JT Realmuto went 2-4 with a double, walk, and 2 stolen bases. Schwarber hit a solo bomb in the top of the 9th with 2 outs to make the score 4-3.

5/17 @ SFG - L (4-7)

Taijuan Walker took the mound with the Phillies looking to avoid a sweep in San Francisco. It is safe to say it was not his day, as he threw 40 pitches, recorded 2 outs, and allowed 4 earned runs. Matt Strahm closed the door in relief with no runs allowed in 2.1 innings of work. Brogdon, Vazquez, Bellati, and Domiguez continued to keep the door shut, and the Phillies were able to tie the game up in the top of the 5th. The game remained tied until the 8th inning, when the Giants scored three runs off Soto. Giants closer Camilo Doval came in for the save, and struck out Trea Turner with the bases loaded to end the game. Turner went 2-5 and Bryson Stott hit a game tying solo home run.
