What's a Fifth Beatle Anyway?

What's a Fifth Beatle Anyway?

The Players Championship, cheekily referred to as the fifth Major, begins on Thursday morning. Although the golfers may be playing for neither jacket nor jug, being crowned champ here is the next best thing. Famously billed as the strongest field in golf, fans should expect an exciting and hotly contested tournament, the type we’ve grown accustomed to so far this year.

For all intents and purposes, this is the unofficial start of the PGA season. The George Martin of competitive golf will set the table for the following months and hopefully answer some of the questions surrounding the biggest names in the game before getting to John, Paul, George and Ringo.

Will Jordan Spieth round into form as he pursues the career Grand Slam at the PGA? Can Rory capitalize on his recent run of form and finally slip on the green jacket, completing his own quest for the career Grand Slam? Does Jon Rahm continue mashing down the gas on his run to legendary status? This week will be a good proving ground for such queries. And seeing how it is one of the biggest stages in golf, The Players is also a great place to make a name.

It seems as if new stars are being minted every week, whether it be Kurt Kitayama most recently, Sahith Theegala over the course of last season, or Tom Kim, the darling of the President’s Cup last September. I’m sure the PGA Tour would be just as pleased with one of the new kids in town announcing themselves to the world as they would having one of the standard bearers.

Regardless of the winner, the golf will be good and the drama thick as some of the best players in the world Mac McClung away their chances at the 17th island green. So remember, even if there are only four Beatles like there are only four majors, The Players Championship as a golf tournament is better than most.
