The first of our spotlights on a former international signing falls on the Milwaukee Brewers #6 prospect Jeferson Quero. Hailing from Barquisimeto, Venezuela, Quero represented his country in the Little League World Series in 2015. Playing second base at the time, the future star went 3-12 with a home run and two RBI, helping his country to a third place finish in the international bracket (GameChanger).
Just four years later in July of 2019, after some extensive work developing his catching skillset, Jeferson was signed as a 16 year-old for a relatively modest $200,000 bonus. He finished out the season in Venezuela and was assigned to the Dominican Summer League for the cancelled 2020 season.
Despite not playing in 2020, Milwaukee assigned the Venezuelan to their Arizona Complex Blue team for the 2021 campaign. In 68 plate appearances, Quero slashed a line of .309/2/8 with a .434 OBP, walking more times than striking out. He also only made two errors behind the plate in 102 innings of work (MiLB), reinforcing many scout's belief in his elite defensive potential.
For this 2022 season, the Brewers assigned their top catching prospect to low-A Carolina. As a member of the Mudcats, the second year pro saw his strikeout rates increase, but still hit a productive .278. There wasn't a ton of home run power in his bat, but there was enough pop to envision a major league hitter. His strong defense also translated upward from the ACL team.
This most recent Monday, August 9th, Jeferson got the call from the organization that he was being promoted. The kid from Barquisimeto is taking his talents up to Wisconsin, to join Milwaukee's top prospect Jackson Chourio on the Timber Rattlers. It's been a slow start in his two games with the club, going 1-9 at the dish, but keep an eye on this guy as he grows his game and continues his climb toward the big leagues.
