For this week's minor league spotlight, we're going back to prospects drafted from high school- featuring 20-year old Calvin Ziegler. The two-time member of the Canadian Junior National team had to overcome a number of hurdles on his journey to the 2021 draft due to COVID. In order to maximize the access scouts had to the young talent, Canada's top-right handed prospect and his family had to relocate mid-pandemic to New York in 2021, ultimately enrolling him at The Next Level Academy in Florida (Baseball America).
The move ended up being wildly beneficial to Ziegler's career. With a commitment to Auburn University as a solid backup plan in place, the right-handed senior was selected with the 46th pick of the 2021 draft by the New York Mets. Scouts spoke most highly on his fastball's movement and command, consistently sitting between 93-95 MPH and peaking at 97. With a slider and curveball also projecting as potential plus-pitches, and a changeup that was a work in progress, the second round selection had a bountiful but raw arsenal of weapons (Canadian Baseball Network). Calvin signed for an underslot value of $910,000 and was off to the minors.
As a member of the St. Lucie Mets, Ziegler has come out strong in his inaugural MiLB season. In ten starts, he's produced an 0-3 record, but that doesn't tell the whole story as he's been incredibly difficult to hit. Calvin has only allowed 15 hits in 35.1 innings, a batting average against of .130 and a respectable 2.7 strikeout to walk ratio (MiLB.com).
Currently the Mets 4th ranked pitching prospect (11th overall, according to MLB.com), Ziegler is a source of excitement for those in the New York organization. He has been progressing quickly through his first minor league assignment, and it would not be a surprise to see a promotion from St. Lucie to Brooklyn by the end of the year, especially if he's able to begin pitching a little deeper into his starts. The team from Queens is hoping he can continue this fast trajectory through the minor leagues. Calvin is currently estimated to make his major league debut sometime in the 2025 season.
