Hailing from Winder, Georgia we have the 53rd ranked prospect in the minors, ranked second in the Nationals system: Brady House. A varsity starter for three seasons at Winder-Barrow high school, House committed to the University of Tennessee during his shortened junior campaign in 2020. By the time he was a senior, the 6'3" 210 lb. shortstop had ascended to the #1 overall prep player in his state and began shooting up draft boards. With his power projectability and career stat line of .524/17/61, it was easy to understand the growing hype train (Max Preps).
House was a very polarizing prospect among scouts and pundits. Some saw him as a potential top pick due to his size and a power tool of 80 (Blessyouboys). Others saw him as stiff and often too long in the swing to catch up to higher velocities. There were also concerns across the board about what his ultimate position in the field would be.
With the 11th pick in the 2021 MLB amateur draft, the Washington Nationals officially made the Georgia product a part of the organization. After inking a modestly over slotted $5 million dollar signing bonus (NBC Sports), the 18 year old was off to rookie ball in Florida. Brady shined in the sixteen games he played down in the Sunshine State, to tune of .322/4/12. Many of the tools he had shown at Winder-Barrow were translating to the higher level of competition.
This season, House was assigned by Washington to their low-A affiliate, the Fredericksburg FredNats. As a part of the Carolina league, the guys at Chopping Lines were able to catch the rising star play in Delmarva on April 9th. He hit the ball hard all night on the way to going 3-4 with a home run and 4 RBI, absolutely destroying the Shorebirds.
Unfortunately this season hasn't been all great for the up and coming player. Despite slashing a solid line of .278/3/31, House has made thirteen errors at shortstop (MiLB.com). He's also had two stints on the injured list, missing two weeks at the beginning of May for an undisclosed injury and recently on June 23rd with a back injury. Jesse Dougherty of the Washington Post reported that the team is trying to manage the second year pro's workload as he tries to adapt to a longer season (CBS Sports).
We're hoping this back injury is a minor one and that Brady can get back onto the field sometime this season. Currently projected to make his major league debut in 2024 (per MLB.com), missing over half a season of low-A ball would likely delay his development and debut some. Be sure to follow this exciting prospect as he continues chasing the big league dream.
